There are many ways that we get information about the candidates when an election comes around. There are ads on television showing the best qualities of each party and person and the worst of the opposing side and visits to big cities and small towns where they can answer questions about the local issues that might swing votes in one direction or the other. Whether you're about to open your own Edmonton laser clinic or are a single mother working two jobs, everyone has topics that matter to them in elections. One of the ways to hear them discussed is by tuning in to political debates.

When you're looking into any political debate you should first check the format. This information will usually be available a few days before the event and it will tell you roughly how many topics will be discussed and how the candidates will go about addressing their arguments. There is also always a moderator for the debate who fields the questions and enforces the rules. This could be a Toronto lawyer, a university political science professor or a news magazine host, for example.

You won't know what topics are being discussed until the night of the debate because they will want to tackle the most relevant and pressing issues. During an election, the things people want to know more about can change several times. People might be focusing on waterfront property PEI based that is being turned into a resort in a city election and then find out about a major plant that is closing. This might shift the topics they would want to hear about on the night of the debate.

The purpose of the debate is of course for the candidates to show that they know about the issues that matter to their constituents and that they will be able to tackle the problems they face should they be elected. They will also want to show that their opponents have flaws that might make them less suitable for office. Someone who worked up from working at a woodworking machinery supplier might highlight their economic experience while a former lawyer might show how they can efficiently work with other leaders throughout their country and others.

When you're listening to the debate you should try to focus on what the candidates are saying they will do and less on what they are saying about each other. Once they win, it will no longer be about the others faults so much as whether or not they can get the job done. If you're a London home builder or a nurse in BC, you should focus on answers that will affect you during their time in offer.
