Dennis Apuan

About Dennis

Representative Dennis Apuan, in his first term, is the Colorado State Representative for House District 17, which includes southwestern Colorado Springs and the Fort Carson military base. He is a member of the Health and Human Services Committee and the Local Government Committee.

Dennis and his family emigrated to America from the Philippines when he was 20 in search of better economic opportunities.  His immigrant experience has played a large part in shaping who he is today.  It is a driving force in his fight to ensure that all have a voice at the table no matter how small or seemingly powerless that voice may be.

He worked as a sales manager in Southern California for nearly a decade before moving to Colorado Springs to be closer to his family in 1997.   He took a job at Broadmoor Community Church, where he began as a janitor and later became the church's business administrator.

He has always been involved in community activism and grassroots organizations.  His search for something more meaningful brought him to the non-profit sector and eventually to the Colorado Legislature.  He has been a champion for the disenfranchized, marginalized, and disempowered.  Just before election he worked   as a community organizer for Colorado Unity which is a non-profit  committed to preserving and promoting effective affirmative action policies as one tool to redress discrimination. He is now a small business owner in Colorado Springs.

Dennis is a former member of the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs Diversity Strategic Planning Team.  He is the only Asian Pacific American currently serving in the 67th general assembly and is the very first FIlipino-American to ever serve in the Colorado Legislature.
